Chapter Twenty nine, Aymo's car gets stuck into the muddy ground and they can't get it moving. Troops came in to attack, Henry drew his gun and shot one of them. Then Bonello took Henry's gun shot the enemy again to make sure he was down for good. The men start to gather branches and twigs to put under the car to get it moving again. They leave the car behind and move on with the other vehicles eventually they all get stuck. They continue to Udine by foot and send the two girls that were with them away with money to get hotels to stay safe.

26 -28

Henry stays up late talking to the priest about the war and how he doesn't believe in victory anymore. The next morning it is raining and Henry has to go to a place in the mountains where battle is taking place. The Germans were attacking, they are terrified of the Germans because there are fifteen divisions. Henry's forces re-treat, he travels with Aymo, Bonello and Piani and Tenente they come to the town Gorizia. Henry and some of the other soldiers stopped there to rest, and eat. Then they move on taking turns sleeping, when not driving. They pick up two girls to travel with. Henry falls asleep and dreams about Catherine and ends up talking out loud in his sleep. Henry really is missing Catherine and wishes to be with her, he thinks how if there wasn't a war he could be with her.

22-25

Henry is diagnosed with jaundice, the nurse believes his condition is because of his drinking. The hospital takes away all his liquor. It is also believe that he wanted to become ill, so that he would not have to return to the front. Catherine and him have until midnight when Henry has to leave to return to the front. They get a hotel room and eat dinner. Henry is concerned about Catherine having the baby and asks her how she will manage she says that it'll all be fine and wonderful when he comes home. Catherine has a very positive attitude about Henry going back to the front, she isn't excited about it, but she is very accepting of it, of course it was World War 1 and it was way different then things are today. Henry goes on a train where he has to sit on the floor because it is so packed. He returns to the front and finds Rinaldi his old roomate that he hasn't seen in a few months. Rinaldi is very happy to see him they joke around but Rinaldi made remarks about him and Catherine that somewhat upseted Henry.

19-21

Chapter nineteen and twenty Catherine and Henry are at a horse races with some friends, they bet on a horse because they like the color, they don't win. I don't really understand the importance of chapter nineteen and twenty. In chapter twenty one, Henry is at the hospital he can now move around by himself with a cane. This means he can no longer go in public with Catherine. Before they could because it was not unusual to see a wounded man accompanied by a nurse, but Henry is now recovering well. Henry goes back to the hospital, Catherine is on the night shift again and comes to Henry's room late at night. She has something important to tell Henry but she doesn't want to worry him or make him unhappy. Catherine is pregnant. Henry doesn't have much emotion when she tells him. He is not unhappy, but he does say he feels trapped but not by Catherine. Catherine pours Henry a drink and says she'll return later.

(what a coinsidence) The first surgeon that sees Henry tells him he needs to wait 6 months before having his knee operated on. Henry doesn't want to wait that long and demands to get another surgeons advice. Dr. Valentini is the second surgeon, he says he can operate the next day on Henry's knee, he is cheerful and gets along with Henry well, they even have a drink together. The operation is done and Henry got very sick. Catherine was working the night shift to be with Henry. Chapter 18 tells about the summer Henry and Catherine spent together, Henry mentions how he will have to go back to the front soon, but Catherine doesn't want to think about it. They are both very happy and in love. Henry really want to marry Catherine but they can't because their relationship has to be a seceret, or else Catherine will be sent away and they would be broken up because of the war. Catherine is content with the way things are and considers herself as Henry's wife anyways.

Chapters nine and ten

Chapter nine the men are still away, they are hungary and get food they returned to a dugout to eat and a furnace door swung open and exploded. Henry can barley breathe, a trench motar had exploded. Two of the men were killed, the remaining men brought Henry to a near hospital to get his injured leg treated. Henry's roomate came to visit Henry, and the priest from his village. Henry talks to the priest and tells him how badley he wants the war to be over, the priest tells him to keep his hope.

7 and 8

Henry comes back from a post and sees a group of soldiers, and a few stragglers, even further behind was a man struggling to keep up. Henry talked to him and wanted to help, the soldier explained how he had a hernia, and had a truss to support it but he threw it away so he would not have to go on in the army. Henry tells the man to fall and hit his head and then he'd come back and bring him to get help somewhere. I admire that Henry has a good heart even during this horrible war. Later Henry returned to the village, he drank with some buddies and then wanted to see Catherine. When he went to visit her another nurse told Henry that she was sick and won't come see him. The next day, Henry has to go away again to an attack, he stops again at the hospital to see Catherine before he leaves she gave him a "St. Anthony medal".. (i think its like a necklace).. she said it would protect him while he was gone. I don't exactly understand the relationship between Catherine and Henry, I feel as if they barley know eachother, but she told him she loved him, then sometimes she won't see him or kiss him. I think she's a tease or maybe playing hard to get.
